The Box Project
History of The Box Project
Born out of a conversation between Vermont native Virginia Naeve and Coretta Scott King at the Geneva Disarmament Conference in 1962 about war, segregation and man’s inhumanity associated with poverty in America, especially, Mississippi.
Ms. Naeve held a Civil Rights Conference in her home and collected 250 boxes of clothing which were mailed to needy families in Mississippi; The Box Project was originally named the Mississippi Box Project;
By 1967, 300 families in 18 states were corresponding with and helping families in the South
About The Box Project
The Box Project is a coordinated way of matching sponsors (families, individuals, churches, organizations, businesses) with needy families in the Mississippi Delta, South Dakota Native American Reservation, Appalachia Region (West Virginia & Kentucky) and rural regions of Maine; Recipients are screened and recommended by non-profit service agencies and pay a $10 yearly Recipient membership fee; Family Memberships are $50 annually and Corporate/ Partner membership dues are $500 annually
The Sponsorship fee is not about paying a fee… it is about their relationship with the recipient family providing them with friendship and material aid
Media Highlights
The Box Project has been highlighted in Women’s Day, Good Housekeeping, Farm Wife News, Family Circle, New Age, Parent, Redbook, Better Homes & Gardens and Lady’s Circle magazines, just to name a few.
