Place-based education is teaching and learning that is rooted in the unique history, environment, culture, and economy of a particular place. The community provides the context for learning, student work focuses on community needs and interests, and community members serve as resources and partners in every aspect of teaching and learning. Place-based education engages students in work that is relevant to them and their communities, useful to their communities and honored by the adults in their lives.
Priority areas will be education, health care and young people. The Community Foundation will make grants to Northwest Mississippi organizations that have programs or initiatives that seek to impact their communities in these priority areas. Support may be given to organizations that are recognized as Section 501(c)3 by the Internal Revenue Service, governmental bodies or public charities. The organizations must serve the community with no discrimination by age, race, gender or religion. The Community Foundation will not consider grants for individuals, exclusively religious purposes, political purposes or special occasion advertising. Priority will be given to grant applications that first show availability of matching funds and second to programs that address the Community Foundation’s priority areas. The foundation will also consider how grants may raise regional visibility, increase capacity, leverage additional donations and reward previous grant eligibility.
